Chapter.2　Be Natural

The sun’s wake-up call fell from above the curtain.

For a moment I didn’t know where I was.

Yes, I’ve moved.

People get upset when the view they see first thing in the morning is different from the usual one.

As I put my hand on the doorknob to wash my face, I thought.

What? Wait.

When I open this door, I’ll see my other share mates, right?

This is what it’s like to live in a share house, right?

I wonder if I should change my clothes. I wonder if I’ll be okay.

The water supply is only in the common area, so I’ll have to go there to start my day.

Slightly disappointed in myself, I opened the door for the day, wondering why I should be nervous about such a thing.

Good morning!

I passed my modern art sleeping habit, pajama-clad, toothbrush-wearing sharemate on the stairs.

She was holding a laundry basket and brushing her teeth as she climbed the stairs.

A very handy and very moochy person.

 

I felt ashamed of myself for hesitating to go wash my face.

Yeah. This is my home, and I can live here without feeling self-conscious.

I washed my face at the big washbasin.

I brush my teeth.

The feeling of being a housemate in someone’s house has faded a little.

 

It’s been a long time since I’ve had a relaxing morning.

There was someone making coffee in the kitchen.

Jack Johnson is playing in the background.

Be natural.

 

I went back to my room and sat down on a chair.

I touch the desk with both hands and straighten my posture.

I try every stage of the electric dimmer, bright and dark. A little dark, a little light, everything.

Checked the heating and cooling systems to make sure they were working properly.

The facilities were all right for now.

Maybe I’ve chosen the right house.

I’m so proud of myself for choosing my first house!

 

From outside the window, I hear “Ohayo gozaimasu” (Good morning), as if I’m shouting it to a teacher five kilometers away.

The greetings of elementary school students are voluptuous and cute.

Are they really afraid of the teacher, or is the teacher teaching them wrong?

One foot in front of the other, they’re starting to blend into the share house and the city.

 

Someone said that the sky is connected.

 

Someone sang, “I wonder if you’re looking at the same sky.

 

The same reading of the word “sky” is “sora”.

The word “sora” means

Endless sky.

Heaven. The expanse between heaven and earth.

Space. Time. Time.

Infinite time that extends to the past, present, and future.

It also means

Now I am in the air, looking at the sky.

I can’t change the sky, but I can change the air.

I don’t want to be left behind.

Little by little, I move the air.
